The Beacon welcomes the IW Council’s Eco Island campaign which continues the environmental policies of previous administrations. The aim of the IW Council’s "Eco Island" project is to make the Island carbon neutral and energy self-sufficient by 2020. The Island needs clear long-term objectives. One imperative is the reduction in landfill waste through reducing our volumes of consumed waste and increased recycling of what we cannot avoid. A green vision of the Island should also include enhancing our unique biodiversity through careful land and coastal maritime management. Our green vision should also include reducing our reliance on imports by increasing our self-reliance so that the Island as a whole can keep more of its own wealth in a local market. With consistent policies towards these aims the Island would become cleaner, richer and more attractive to visitors, as well as environmentally sustainable.
